NEformat

50 minutes, The Netherlands/Russia (2002)
language: Russian
subtitles: English
ThankEve Productions
NEFORMAT is a documentary focusing on Moscow's underground music scene. This scene may be hard to find, but is certainly not fast asleep. Ignored by radio stations and record companies, Moscow's neformat ("non-mainstream") bands have managed to combine Russia's singer-songwriter tradition with western underground influences. The result: intense music, honest lyrics and energetic live performances. The documentary NEformat features the Moscow-based bands Uly, Sedmaya Rasa and Deti Khurmy. Uly, a band playing pop-punk, have already released three albums but are still "widely known only in narrow circles". The reason is not a lack of talent, but an almost bankrupt record company. The leader of Sedmaya Rasa, a band playing grunge with more serious and reflective lyrics, came all the way from Kazakhstan to rock out on Moscow's club stages, but now has to produce food for cosmonauts to support himself. In the meanwhile the members of Deti Khurmy, based in Moscow's endless bleach suburbs, are playing straight forward rap-metal; they're fighting against not only Russia's political system but also falling apart motorcycles and amplifiers. Each band is shown in a different cinematic style. NEFORMAT is a unique showcase for a scene known by few outside Russia.

Welcome to New York is an experimental documentary on the influence of a conservative think tank, the Manhattan Institute, on New York during the 1990s, and the response of citizens to the corporate-friendly policies of the Giuliani administration. It also offers a glimpse at the resurgent conservatism of the post 9/11 era in the U.S. With text, music, found footage and interviews, the tape is an irreverent essay on a neoliberal vision of urban life that has been marketed throughout the world.

- Watch- Seconds:Forever describes two positions: of screening and being screened, watching and being watched, controlling and being controlled. example: the physical and psychical situation of victims of terror and torture. The victim, paralyzed, remains in motionlessness, while the surrounding environment and elements move permanently. It represents the actual situation of experiencing torture, as well as the psychological situation the victims remains in until the end of his life. Terror and torture have destroyed certain structures of self-protecting, watching: human dignity. Although the work is connected to real experience, it represents also a metaphor for victims of every day life, who are not aware that they are victims. Circling

14 minutes, UK (2002)
‘Circling’ explores a process which in reality moves threedimensionally, yet has been altered to operate cyclically. Literally moving through a space and back again, a simple circling shaft of light exists. Coupled with sounds sourced in reality, the viewer is presented with an abstract visual cycle displaced from a reality based audio cycle. The sound is comprised of three elements: organic (rain), emotional (moments shared by myself and my family), and functional (transport) orchestrated into a symphony of ambient noise. The result leaves the viewer feeling both included and left out, unaware of where the cycles begin and end, unsure of whether the markers signify entrance or exit.

facing time. parallel in an orbit

12 minutes, Austria (2002)
language: english
Hofstetter Kurt and Barbara Doser , Langegasse 42/8c, 1080 Vienna, Austria
In 12 time zones around the earth two persons spend one hour facing the sun. They are parallel to each other; their seeing rays and the sunbeams in parallel point to the same infinitely distant point, where they meet each other. Simultaneously, they rotate with the earth and circulate around the sun. It is about parallelism and circulation, staged to experience time. Moments of this time experience are recorded by a video camera. The camera is directed towards the sun and towards the same infinitely distant point, back-light shooting. The persons become silhouettes that frame the light of the sun. The radical reduction of the formal matter and action (story line), intensified by the camera focus, consequently repeated all around the earth, gives the viewer time to reflect. The slowness of the pictures opens the possibility of finding parallel contents beyond the formal image reception. To spend time with time, from abstract time (artificial slow motion of natural movements) up to the time experienced as a cosmic process (rotation of the earth) ... or to be bored ... as long as the picture is interrupted by a certain question, which again reflects on time. Image perception depends on time. Time codes images. A video out of time to experience time? * “facing time” is a parallel project of the international media art project “Sunpendulum” recorded at the installation sites of the “Sunpendulum Time-Eyes”. www.sunpendulum.at

3 minutes, romania, italy (2002)
language: english
subtitles: english
mona vatamanu and florin tudor
the video contains 3 layers: personal, cultural, socio political. It is an interpretation of Red Desert by Michelangelo Antonioni, a peronal story related to an island called Pellestrina and an insignificant personal event that took place at the same time as powerful protests in palestina (palestina/pellestrina). the idea is that you can live somewhere so remote that you don't notice surrogate news offered by television.

yBa (cook's voyage)

16 minutes, Australia (2002)
language: English
Dunne/Arkins
yBa (cook's voyage) seeks to establish a culturally specific voice in relation to the yBa 'phenomenon', that of the antipodes, periphery, as opposed to the cultural 'centre' of London. Through a repetitive, gestural performance the artist sings a dissonant song of the letters 'Y...B...A...' and dances for the camera, oblivious of passers by. The work which was completed on Australia Day 2002 in Hyde Park, Sydney, where festivities to celebrate the anniversary of Captain Cook's landing in Botany Bay were taking place, seeks to comment on current trends/attitudes in global curatorial practice in relation to art production outside 'centre's' such as London. yBa (cook's voyage) seeks to destabilise the maintenance of a global cultural hierarchy/canon in relation to such phenomena as the yBa's through critiquing its effect on production and attitudes outside the established 'centre's'.
