La Città dei Vagabondi (The city of the homeless)

5 minutes, Italy (2001)

Realized in 2001, La Città dei Vagabondi is project about my research in Sociology. Turned on the streets of different cities as Paris, London, New York, Milan, Bologna, Salerno this work concerns the urban structure and the homeless. It’s an exploration of the city with the presence of a particular subject of own society in interaction with the urban structure. The intention is to “read” the society with the “eye” of a camera and the drum & bass music, the sound of the contemporary city.

Lights Go On

3 minutes, UK (2001)
language: English subtitles: English

The song of the nightclub cloakroom attendant (with lyrics written with an actual attendant) is the soundtrack to images of a nightclub on a Sunday morning. As an artist I am interested in the social and personal aspects of popular entertainment, such as music, comedy and storytelling. For instance, choral music has traditionally been a way of literally uniting communities in a shared culture, but in my works involving choral music, such as Lights Go On, this is often contrasted by a focus on an individual, socially isolated subject, and on the subjective, ambiguous readings that music can bring to any context.

OMNIGENUS / Higijenski ulosci od koprive za mentalnu higijenu (OMNIGENUS / Pantyliners Made of Nettle for your Mental Hygiene)

18 minutes, Serbia and montenegro (2001)
language: Serbian subtitles: English
“Beogradski Oktobarski Salon”, Belgrade, Serbia and Montenegro

The Pantyliners Made of Nettle are designed in such a way that it fits contemplative needs of all genders and the soft absorbing layer has been replaced by a plant which causes painful irritation of skin. Through the transfer of purpose, the pantyliner, from a product for physiological hygiene, turns into a product for mental hygiene. The pantyliner is known as a product intended for women during their period, but in this case it is advertised by a male, female, hermaphrodite and eunuch. Omnigenus raises the question of the traditional establishment of social institutions and the growing influence of clericalism in Serbian society, with clear allusions to savagely beaten-up participants in the parade of the ‘sexually different’ on the Day of Pride (Belgrade, 2001), which has not been adequately reacted to by the political structures and the official church. “OMNIGENUS” is made in a form of TV advertisement under the slogan of »Urtica medicamentum est« (Nettle Cures), and it has been broadcasted during 2001 on following Serbian TV stations: TV “B92” channel, TV Politika, ART channel, TV “Pink”, “SOS” channel, “YU info”. Serbian National Television (RTS) refused to broadcast Omnigenus because of the “obscene” content. www.urtica.org/omnigenus copy: “OMNIGENUS Pantyliners Made of Nettle are designed to suit the mental needs of all genders. The tender absorbing layer has been replaced by a plant that causes painful irritation of the skin, thus maintaining your social adequacy. OMNIGENUS Pantyliners Made of Nettle for your Mental Hygiene.”

DEMO DERBY

Demolition Derbies are a “sport” with few rules and only one aim, to wreck each others’ car. Watch the slow transformation of old cars decorated with dead heads and slogans like "It hurts", "You lose" or "In memory of dad" into deformed, smoking bulks of metal on broken wheels. It’s the grotesque beauty of car crashes: A ballet of pure energy and adrenaline driven destruction.

Of Love and Land

24 minutes, India (2001)
language: English subtitles: English
Octave Communications

“If she gets land, then she can’t get love. She can get one thing alone, she can’t get the two together. If she gets love, she won’t get land. And if she gets land, she won’t get love.” - Bhagwant Singh, Village Kasel, Punjab Randhir Singh and Darshan Kaur’s grandchildren grow up together in the large family home in a village near Amritsar. The children – three boys and three girls – go to the same school, eat together and often, even play together. Yet there are borders which demarcate their lives – the lives the girls will have and the lives their brothers will have. Seen against the backdrop of an alarming and continuously declining sex ratio in the region, these borders assume a critical significance. There is an unquestioning acceptance of what community and convention decree. And as the girls grow up, they know that these are lines they will never cross.

language: English subtitles: English
Octave Communications

“When I was at home, I didn’t know. Whatever I was asked to do, I would do. I used to do whatever my mother asked ne to do. But now I won’t. I’ll ask what’ll happen if I do all the work. I have the right to ask. Shouldn’t everybody in the house share all kind sof work equally, if you are born in the same house.” - Pushpa, Village Bhootpur, Telengana The lives of girl children in Telengana are cloistered between the home and the cotton fields. For many of these girls who have been denied some semblance of childhood, the Mahila Shikshana Kendra at Mahbubnagar is both home and school. The one year that they spend here enables them to share experiences, question roles and even, articulate aspirations. For Pushpa, Govindamma and their friends, it has meant the opportunity to imagine a future beyond the cotton fields.
