Testimonios: Hiphop Colombiano Ano 2000

23 minutes, Colombia (2000)
language: Spanish subtitles: English
Intermundos

This is the first documentary about the Colombian hiphop movement. It was made with no budget, out of pure solidarity. 60% of it is stock footage shot between 1994 and 2000, the rest was shot from May to July 2000. This video is about hiphop in Colombia, and the difficulties that the youth faces after 40 years of war. Taking you from Bogota to Cali to Medellin, it depicts the history of its arrival in Colombia, the reasons it has been so strongly adopted by the Colombian youth and most importantly the beautiful positive movement that it has become. We made it as an underground attempt at breaking the communication blockade imposed on Colombia. We are Intermundos and we will continue to promote cultural exchange between Colombia and the rest of the world.

retrograd

31 minutes, Germany (2000)
language: german with English subtitles. subtitles: English, Spanish, Corean

From the dawning of film history until the dismantling of its own Film Institute, the Berlin Charité hospital produced approximately 1000 educational medical films, expository films and experimental science films. There is no film history of the Charité itself. There are scraps: fragments in the form of notes, articles a few photos and a number of films that have remained. How can one tell a story that does not exist, that appears only intermittently in a context of images and documents full of gaps?

I DON´T REMEMBER

120 minutes, Norway (2000)
language: English, French
Realized at The Trondheim Academy of Fine Art

The idea of this tape is to expose the interlocking psychology of the “master-slave” relationship; the one that is in a position of power, therefore is dominant in the relationship with the one that is persecuted, therefore is in a subordinate position. The rules were set and the performance stops when the woman may not perform any more. She is blindfolded, loaded with luggage and she has to follow the orders that are executed by a man who is constantly directing her. However, he is present only via his speech. The basic pattern of the performance derives from the attitudes and norms of military institutions and from the refugees phenomena that is caused globally by numerous regional wars. Performance was set in the room with the large video projection of the rail tracks that were shot from the moving train. The rule was that she had to move out from the projected image in the case that she appeared on the field of the screening. The viewer gets the information on the activity in the room via the sound. The rail tracks video is a meditative element that counterparts the terrorizing event of the performance. The landscape on the videotape is anonymous; so to say, it might be anybodies landscape from everywhere. The video opens up the information censorship of mass media and the issue of personal experience in the crisis management.

QUESTIONING, ANSWERING

58 minutes, Norway (1999)
language: English
Realized at The Trondheim Academy of Fine Art

The video performance includes two women busts in front of the camera; one is presented from en-face and is blind folded while another one is presented from a profile. The one is questioning and checking the blindfolded one her knowledge of English language. The idea of this video is based on the fact that on one hand, in the process of globalization, the English language is becoming the universal language for communication. On the other hand, foreign speaking peoples are transforming it. Another aspect of the performance is to emphasize, by this language "game", the power of a native speaker over the questioned person. My interest was also to expose the blindfolded one that is questioned, to just phonetic information that lacks the body language, which plays an important role in communication. Another notion of this tape is to point out the intention topic that is the cardinal element of communication, meaning that we understand each other beyond the language borders only, if we are willing to communicate. The video is also about the relationship between investigator-executioner and the prosecuted, powerless victim. This level of narration refers to the totalitarian practices in many parts of the world in the context of the humanity’s global struggle for personal dignity and integrity.

Assorted Raw Content

0 minutes, USA (1996)
language: English
HENRY BROTHERS STUDIO

In this series of works Doug Henry has been using familiar theatrical, cinematic and TV narrative styles and structures to develop an exploration of the more superficial aspects of the ways images and ideas are used to create meaning…. I DON'T READ ANYTHING An insular feed back system. The impulse to consume is externalized, structured and decorated and then re-internalized. HEY/WHAT A conversation using only two words in which what is exchanged is a quantity of iterations. I FELT BETTER… Entropy at work in the physical system that produces consciousness. THAT’S WHAT YOU ORDERED A Form vs. Content duality emerges at the Dinner table. ROLLING ROCK A bar viewed as a machine that transfers beer. (The bottles look like pistons!) MY FRIENDS/MY THINGS A conflation of (opposing?) values as desire (in your choice of formulations: as Lack or as Production) overrides subsequent impulses. GOOD/BAD/INDIFFERENT An in depth analysis of the relativity of values. WINNERS What it LOOKS like to FEEL like a winner. REBELS A drama about the threshold of significance, sensation vs. thinking. I KNOW ABOUT YOU… A music video in which the performer is a percussionist. NATURE An aphorism about the nature of nature. TOMATO PICKERS A drama about the threshold of significance, sensation vs. thinking. MY FRIENDS/MY THINGS -- My this my that, pride of ownership as unifying principle. I'M WITH STUPID -- An experiment in bonding. A repulsive agent is introduced into a system and attempts to bond with other agents. GOD AND GENERALS An aphorism about the nature of God. NEW CAR Different aspects of the experience of buying, owning and driving a car are superimposed over images that might be used to sell one a car to produce a complex of tensions that define a CAR. NOT AFRAID OF BOB Dramatic feeling liberated from dramatic context. GIBBERISH A drama about one mans struggle to come to terms with the relationship of thoughts to objects in the world. MICKEY MOUSE EARS A drama about how random elements combine to produce meaning. EATIN’ PIZZA An experiment in meta-communication. Chatter between to individuals is used as a carrier for the virus: Eatin’ Pizza, a formerly meaningless expression introduced to replace both positive and negative expressions.

about the media library

The Media Library will be a permanent space in the festival that hosts a collection of media productions with a specific social, cultural or political agenda. Media of crisis, criticism and opposition. Media that provide an antidote to the world as we see it represented in mainstream media and current geopolitics. The Media Library can be accessed by any festival participant during the festival. You can browse the catalogues and watch films individually on in small groups, partly on computer screens and partly on video monitors.
