Chungking House, de Luxe Hotel

32 minutes, the Nederlands / Hong Kong (2002)
language: Dutch, Chinese and English subtitles: English
AUTO-FILM

CHUNGKING HOUSE, de Luxe Hotel. Chungking House, Hotel de luxe. As Leonard Cohen sang to one of his girlfriends In New York: ‘I remember you well, from the Chelsea Hotel.’ Films and books have long been dedicated to the inhabitants of this and other hotels, which captured our imagination. Now for the first time, Chungking Mansion, a building complex of stores, restaurants and lodging for nearly 4000 people, joins them on film. Ivanka Bakker spent three weeks there, looking for the stories of the residents, mostly criminals, prostitutes and underground characters. She wasn’t given permission to film, and residents were reluctant to give up their anonymity. ‘In this building [...] you cannot trust’, says Alice, the woman from whom Bakker rents her room. And yet a bond develops between the two women. Alice gradually reveals her story; hard work, an unhappy marriage. With its narrow corridors and stairwells, and windowless rooms, this complex defies all humanity. Its tiled walls are reminiscent of an imposing institution. Even the filmmaker enters into its anonymity. The sole, and misleading, window to the outside world is the television, and its commercials: ‘Think of a city that is progressive, free, stable, where opportunity abounds and quality is premium. A community that is innovative, cosmopolitan, enterprising and well-connected. This is Hong Kong, Asia’s world city!’

Disobbedienti

54 minutes, Austria/Italy (2002)
language: Italian subtitles: English
Oliver Ressler (in cooperation with Dario Azzellini)

The video ”Disobbedienti” thematizes the Disobbedienti’s origins, political bases, and forms of direct action on the basis of conversations with seven members of the movement. The Disobbedienti emerged from the Tute Bianche during the demonstrations against the G8 summit in Genoa in July 2001. The ”Tute Bianche” were the white-clad Italian activists who used their bodies – protected by foam rubber, tires, helmets, gas masks, and homemade shields – in direct acts and demonstrations as weapons of civil disobedience. At the G8 summit in Genoa the Tute Bianche decided to take off their trademark white overalls that had given them their name and instead blend in the multitude of 300,000 demonstration participants. The transition from the Tute Bianche to the Disobbedienti, the disobedients, also marked a development from ”civil disobedience” to ”social disobedience.”

Façadisme, choucroute & démocratie

44 minutes, Belgium (2002)
language: French /English/ Dutch subtitles: French
vox (video organization for x)

"Façadisme" is a typical word from Brussels, the town where the EU institutions are trying to build a "European Capital". But Brussels is only an administrative capital for Europe. The way the buildings of the EU institutions are conceived is a mirror for the political construction of Europe: cold and crushing architecture, with no place for real life… even in decisions concerning the city itself, democracy is an illusion: in fact, the citizens are not included. The video explains a complicated story: how a false "international congress center" built in 1987 by some belgian banks with the secret help of the State, became the seat of the European Parliament. How this Institution which is supposed to be "the voice of the citizens" manages its relationship with their neighbours in Brussels. And how today, with the enlargement of the EU, two new extensions of the colossal fortress will be built in a post-september 11th obsession with security

Instant Salvation

3 minutes, Germany (2002)
language: German / English subtitles: English

A collage of quotations – image and sound - from the film 'Terminator 2 - Judgement Day' by James Cameron (1991), mixed with sentences out of the 4 gospels of the New Testament, spoken by a female voice. Thyes takes scenes from the film where Christian moral cliche’s and myths of the saviour are shown, combines them with texts out of the bible, and interrupts them with product placements, shown in the same film. The "saviours" – Terminator Schwarzenegger and the boy – and the visionary "Madonna" - Sarah, mother of the boy – convert the black scientist to destroy his work and to sacrifice himself: a typically Christian story of colonisation.

Hippies from Hell

53 minutes, Netherlands (2002)
language: Dutch subtitles: English
IP-productions

Hippies From Hell is a group of hackers, techies, artists, writers and puzzlers. In the eighties they published hacker magazine Hacktic and in 1993 they started the first Dutch Internet-provider, xs4all, thus opening the Internet for the general public. Apart from this they throw wild parties and organize open-air hacker festivals, using the Internet as their social platform. On their mailing list they discuss almost every aspect of our technology infested society. The Dutch hackers, as the hippies were called initially, are a special group within the international hacker movement that they helped create for a large part. In the film artists play with hardware, young Hippies hack their school-calculators, lock pickers open locks without a key: hacking is not just fooling around with technology, it is an attitude, an activity, a verb.

about the media library

The Media Library will be a permanent space in the festival that hosts a collection of media productions with a specific social, cultural or political agenda. Media of crisis, criticism and opposition. Media that provide an antidote to the world as we see it represented in mainstream media and current geopolitics. The Media Library can be accessed by any festival participant during the festival.
